Martha Karnopp is like
Clark
Kent—a
quiet demeanor covering up a real Wonder Woman.
Early in life, Martha
was valedictorian of her high school class, Outstanding Girl
student and representative to
Girls
State.
In college, she consistently made the Dean’s List, while
enrolled in an honors program, and was selected for memberships
in the scholastic honor groups Phi Beta Kappa and Phi Kappa Phi.
She graduated with honors in math and English.
After teaching high school math for 3 years,
Martha wanted to address some of the injustices in our society
and decided to go to law school. She again regularly made the
Dean’s List and was selected as editor-in-chief for the Land and
Water Law Review. She graduated with honors and was one of the
first 50 women to be admitted to the Wyoming Bar. On top of
that, Martha’s first child, Robin, was born six weeks before she
graduated.
Martha started her own law practice so that
she could spend time with her children. While they were young,
she served as a Girl Scout troop leader, room mother, and field
trip chaperone.
She also
worked with the Hunger Project to end world hunger, with Beyond
War to bring an end to war, and then became involved in RESULTS,
a citizens advocacy group to build the political will to end
hunger and poverty. She has volunteered with RESULTS for over 15
years in many capacities, including going to
Washington,
DC
at her own expense for 12 years to lobby for legislation to end
hunger and poverty.
Martha has also been active in
the Arapahoe County Democrats for 30 years, holding several
positions as precinct committee person, house district chair,
senate district chair and candidate for state representative.
She
continued raising her children after her husband’s death from
brain cancer. Her three children are all graduates of
Colorado
universities.
In her profession, Martha has been
secretary-treasurer for the Aurora Bar Association and secretary
to the Solo-Small Firm section of the Colorado Bar Association.
She served on the 18th Judicial District nominating
commission for six years. She has been a member of the Southeast
Metropolitan Law Club for six years. She helps the elderly and
their families in dealing with end-of-life issues with
compassion and skill.
Martha has also served on the Arapahoe County
Budget Review Committee and Ethics Committee.
